Valssi - Waltz

Seuraavana esitelty rekonstruktio parivalssista pohjaa pääasiassa Thomas Wilsonin hitaan ranskalaisen valssin ohjeeseen vuodelta 1816, huomioiden Edward Paynen vuoden 1818 valssiaskelten ohjeen sekä Lowes' Ball Conductor and Assembly Guiden valssiotteiden kuvaukset (1830).

Valssi paritanssina: Ensimmäinen kuvio

Valssia voi tanssia useampi pari yhtä aikaa. Parit asettuvat sopivin välimatkoin kehään tanssisalissa. Tanssin kiertosuunta on vastapäivään. Daami on herran oikealla puolella, molemmat katsovat tanssisuuntaan.

Ensimmäinen kuvio on promenadi. Käsiote: herran oikea käsi daamin olkapäällä, daamin vasen käsi herran oikean käsivarren päällä. Vapaat kädet edessä kaariotteessa. Vaihtoehtoinen käsiote: Daamin oikea käsi koukussa selän takana, herra tarttuu siihen daamin selän takaa omalla oikealla. Vasemmat kädet kiinni edessä.

Herran vasen jalka ja daamin oikea jalka edessä, paino taaemmalla jalalla. Pari aloittaa sopivaksi katsomassaan kohtaa musiikkia, fraasin alussa. Kumpikin astuu tahdin ykkösellä edessä olevalla eli ulommoisella jalalla askeleen eteenpäin. Seuraavan tahdin ykkösellä astuu parin puoleinen jalka, kolmannen tahdin ykkösellä ulommainen jne. Pari etenee vähintään neljä tahtia tällä tavoin, halutessaan pidempään.

1 ulkojalka
2 tauko (vapaa jalka liukuu tukijalan viereen)
3 tauko

1 sisäjalka
2 tauko (vapaa jalka liukuu tukijalan viereen)
3 tauko

jne

Toinen kuvio

Toinen kuvio on pyörintä, jota jatketaan tanssin loppuun. Pyörintä on helpointa aloittaa musiikin fraasin alussa. Herra astuu vasemmalla jalalla askeleen sivulle (pyörinnän alussa daamin viereltä daamin eteen),  pyöräyttää oikean jalan vasemman taakse ja kääntyy päkiöiden varassa puoli kierrosta. Käännöksen seurauksena oikea jalka tulee eteen, ja on valmiina astumaan seuraavan askelen. Herra tanssii valssiaskeleen, eli kolme etenevää askelta (oikea, vasen, oikea) kaarevalla radalla daaminsa ympäri.

1 sivulle
2 taakse
3 kääntyy

1 oikea
2 vasen
3 oikea

1 oikea
2 vasen
3 oikea

1 sivulle
2 taakse
3 kääntyy

Pari jatkaa tanssimista tällä tavoin musiikin loppuun.

Etenevästä promenadista on helpointa siirtyä pyörintään yksinkertaisella otteella: herra siirtää oikean kätensä daamin olalta/kädestä daamin vyötärölle, daami siirtää oman oikean kätensä herran vyötärölle. Vasemmat kädet jäävät vapaiksi sivulle (tai jos tanssijalla on yllään leninki, kannattelee helmaa), lasketaan tanssiparin hartialle tai taivutetaan oman selän taakse. Empireajan valssille ominaista on käsiotteiden vaihtaminen tanssin kuluessa. Esimerkiksi:

  • Herran molemmat kädet daamin vyötäisillä. Daamin kädet joko herran hartioilla tai taivutettuina oman selän taakse, herran käsien päälle. Variaationa daami voi laittaa molemmat kädet herran oikealle hartialle, oikea vasemman päälle.
  • Oikeat kädet kohotettuna kaarelle (vähintään) silmien tason yläpuolelle, vasemmat kädet tanssiparin vyötäröllä. Otteen voi kääntää, eli oikeat kädet laskeutuvat kaaressa alas ja asetetaan vyötärölle; samaan aikaa vasemmat kädet nostetaan ylös.
  • Daamin molemmat kädet kohotettuna korkealle kaarelle pään yläpuolelle. Herran oikea käsi tukee daamin käsiä keskeltä tai on vapaana sivulla; vasen käsi daamin vyötäröllä.

Valssi - Waltzing
1815
British Museum https://www.britishmuseum.org

Waltz as a genteel form of dance made its international breakthrough in Europe during the Empire era. Both group dances and partner dance with simple triple time or sometimes compound time waltz music can be found. Triple time music had been in use for centuries and couples rotating in a closed hold was not exactly new either, as several earlier folk dances make use of a closed hold. Nevertheless, waltz was aesthetically very different from what was considered proper and decent, causing a lot of conversation at the time.

As waltz was something new it was not instantly standardized. Dancing masters describe various waltz steps and holds. At Alexander's Ball 2020 we will dance both English country dances to waltz music and waltz as a partner dance. The following reconstruction of the partner dance is mainly based on slow French waltz described by Thomas Wilson in 1816. The reconstruction takes into account Edward Payne's instruction for waltz steps (1818) and a description for waltz holds found in Lowes' Ball Conductor and Assembly Guide (1830).

Waltz as a Partner Dance: The First Figure

Waltz can be danced by several couples at a time. The couples place themselves in circle, spaced evenly at a suitable distance. The dance direction is anticlockwise. Lady is on the right side of her gentleman, both face dance direction.

The first figure is promenade. Hold: gentleman's right hand on lady's shoulder, lady's left hand on top of gentleman's arm. Free hands joined in front in a curve. Alternate hold: lady's right hand bent behind her back, gentleman takes her hand with his right. Left hands joined in front.

Gentleman's left foot and lady's right foot in front, weight is on the back foot. The couple starts at a suitable moment, at the beginning of a musical phrase. Both step forward on the downbeat with the front (outside) foot. On the next downbeat step forward on the inside foot, on the third downbeat on the outside foot etc. The couple promenades at least for four bars of music, or longer if they choose to.

1 outside foot
2 pause (free foot glides next to support leg)
3 pause

1 inside foot
2 pause (free foot glides next to support leg)
3 pause

etc

The Second figure

The second figure is turning or pivoting, which will continue until the end of the dance. It is easiest to start at the beginning of a musical phrase. Gentleman steps with left foot to the left (after the promenade this means turning to face his lady), right foot circles behind left foot and then he pivots half a turn on the ball of his feet. Pivoting changes right foot to the front, making it ready to begin the next step. Gentleman dances a progressive waltz step or three steps forward (right, left, right) circling around his lady.

1 side
2 back
3 turn

1 right
2 left
3 right

At the same time the lady uses the same steps but in reverse order. First the lady dances a progressive waltz step, circling around her gentleman, then she steps sideways left and pivots.

1 right
2 left
3 right

1 side
2 back
3 turn

The couple continues to dance like this until the music ends. They keep on turning clockwise all the time. This may cause dizziness, just like period sources eagerly warn us. Although dancing masters do not advice returning to promenade after the beginning (on the contrary, Wilson writes that the French waltz suite should increase in tempo and couples spin around faster) it might be more enjoyable to alternate between promenade and turning.

Handholds while turning with partner

Turning with partner requires a suitable handhold. It is easiest to change from promenade to turning with a simple hold: gentleman moves his right hand from lady's shoulder/hand to her waist, lady moves her right hand to gentleman's waist. Left hands are left free to the side (or hold the skirt up, if the dancer is wearing a dress), are placed on partner's shoulder or bent behind own back. It is typical for Empire era waltz to change hand holds during dance. For example:
  • Gentleman places both hands on lady's waist. Lady's hands either rest on gentleman's shoulders or she bends them behind her back. As a variation lady can place both hands on gentleman's right shoulder, right hand on top.
  • Right arms form an arch above eye level (or higher), left hands on partner's waist. The hold can be reversed: right arms fall down in arch and are placed on partners' waist and left arms are lifted up at the same time.
  • Lady lifts both her arms in arch above her head. Gentleman's right hand supports the lady's hands or is free on the side and left hand is on lady's waist.

Performance by Compagnia Nazionale di Danza Storica. The dance begins like Wilson describes it, but the couples soon get tired of simply pivoting around.

Etrennes à Terpsichoren esitys. Koreografioitu valssi vuodelta 1826. Tanssi alkaa samankaltaisilla kuvioilla kuin improvisoitu valssikin: promenadi jota seuraa paripyörintä. Tanssijat artikuloivat askeleet erittäin selkeästi ja kauniisti.
Performance by Etrennes à Terpsichore. A fully choreographed waltz from 1826. The dance begins in similar manner as an improvised waltz would: promenade and turning. The dancers articulate steps very clearly and beautifully.

Sir Roger de Coverley

Thomas Wilson: The Complete System of English Country Dancing, 1816

4 - 7 parin solamuodostelmassa, epäsäännöllinen progressio.

Musiikki on slip jig-rytminen (9/8).

Ensimmäisessä osassa solan ensimmäinen (A) ja viimeinen (B) pari toimivat muiden odottaessa.

Päästyään kuvion alkuun A-pari cast off, muut seuraavat.

4 - 7 couples in a longways set, irregular progression.

Music in slip-jig time (9/8). Structure: AABBCC (dance figures are not tied to musical structure).

With walking steps or little skips. In compound triple time music, three steps or skips can be done per bar of music.

First Part

In the first part the top couple (A) and bottom couple (B) are active while all others wait.
Short aide-mémoire: lady A and gentleman B always act first; lady B and gentleman A then immediately repeat the same figure. Figures: no hands, right hands, left hands, both hands, dos-à-dos.

Lady A and gentleman B begin on the first bar of a musical phrase, lady B and gentleman A wait for two bars and begin on the third. The figures are thus repeated in canon, lady B and gentleman A always following two bars behind. The figures one by one, each point takes four bars of music:

  • Lady and gentleman approach in the middle and retreat back to place.
  • They approach in the middle, give right hands and turn once round.
  • They return to own place and turn.
  • They approach in the middle, give left hands and turn once round.
  • They return to own place and turn.
  • They approach in the middle, give both hands and turn once round.
  • They return to own place and turn.
  • They approach in the middle and dos-à-dos.
  • They return to own place.
Lady A and gentleman B wait (for two bars) as lady B and gentleman A finish their last figure.

Second Part

In the second part couple A leads and others follow. Couple A changes sides and go outside the set below second couple, change sides again and go below third couple. Couple A continues to weave in and out of the set like this until they reach the bottom place, proper.

From the bottom of the set couple A begins a promenade up the middle of the set. All others follow. When couple A has reached the top of the set they cast off, followed by others. Couple A stops at the bottom of the set and others fill in the set after them. Thus couple A becomes the new couple B and the second couple becomes the new couple A. Dance begins again from the first part and is repeated as many times as needed for all couples to have a chance to lead.

Chestnutin esitys.
Performance by Chestnut. In the first part a turning allemande is danced instead of a dos-à-dos and in the second part the set is rearranged after the cast off in a different way.

Tanssiohjelman suunnitteleminen - Designing a Dance Program

Miten suunnitellaan historiallisten tanssiaisten ohjelmisto?

Mikä tahansa viihdyttävä ohjelma ei siis tule kysymykseen; tapahtumasta ei haluttu toisintoa tästä That Mitchell and Webb Look -sarjan sketsistä.

Tanssit on järjestetty tasojen mukaisiin sarjoihin.

Muutoin sovitus on muusikoiden oma, aikakauden musiikilliseen ilmaisuun sopiva.

How do you design a program for a historical ball? How did it go and what did we learn during the process?

A ball is supposed to be fun.We conceived the ball as historical costuming and/or re-enactment event. If there is a dress code then one could suppose that the program also corresponds with the era we have in mind. So just any type of entertainment would not do; after all we didn't wish to recreate this sketch from That Mitchell and Webb Look. We wanted to use Empire era dances with their original music. We didn't, however, try to exactly replicate a Finnish ball from 1809 - sufficient documentation on the subject is still lacking. We felt that a more general approach was sufficient, limiting the choice of dances to Europe at the turn of the 19th century.

For the second edition of the Ball we would like to retain some aspects while developing and changing others. At the first edition dances were divided into three sets based on how challenging they were. We wanted to keep this kind of division in order to give all the guests something they would enjoy dancing and regulate the number of people on our modest-sized dance floor. Based on our experience we decided to divide the dances into two categories: simple and complicated.

Simple dances feature less figures and no special footwork. Dances in waltz time are also excluded from this category.  Simple dances are good choice for guests who have little or no experience in historical dance and for guests who don't wish to burden their memory with too heavy material. Complicated dances may include longer figures and they should be done with period steps. Compared to last year this category is an amalgamation of intermediate and advanced level dances, with heavy emphasis on the former type. Complicated dances are well suited for guests who have prior dance experience and who find varying rhythms and dance figures to be a positive challenge.

Guests will choose either category and participate in dance accordingly. Dances are arranged to sets that correspond with the said categories. Unlike last time, however, there will be two sets for both categories, offering guests more to choose from - or simply more time to dance.

About half of the dances will be familiar from the previous ball and the other half will be new ones. The program still consists of European middle and upper-class dances and they all have one or more written source dating from 1780 to 1830. Although the chosen period is long and social dancing evolved rapidly during that time we can still argue that our dances share significant stylistic and cultural similarities. Original sources for the dances are from Sweden (incl. Finland), Denmark, Germany, England and Scotland. Half of the dances are longways English country dances, a quarter are cotillions and a quarter are other types of dances.

In most cases the music is the original that belongs to the dance. In two dances other suitable period compositions are used. We have used period arrangements of the music whenever possible. Otherwise the musicians have created a new arrangement that suits the musical idiom of the era.
