Reels

Katso yleisistä reel-tanssien piirteistä täältä. Ensin tanssitaan kiertely, sitten hyppely ja samat kuviot toistetaan sarjan kaikissa rytmeissä: strathspey, reel ja jig. Alla askelikot on kuvattu aina alkavaksi oikealla jalalla, mutta ne voivat luonnollisesti alkaa myös vasemmalla.

Aleksanterin baalissa tanssijat voivat valita tanssivatko kolmen vai neljän hengen kuviossa.

Enkeliska eli reel kolmelle: herra kahden daamin välissä. Kiertely tanssitaan rytmiin sopivalla promenadiaskeleella. Herra aloittaa kiertelyn oikeanpuoleisen daamin kanssa. Kaikki kiertävät 8-kuvion kahdeksassa tahdissa kerran läpi. Hyppely tanssitaan hyppely- tai setting-askelilla, jotka kukin tanssija improvisoi oman makunsa ja kykyjensä mukaan. Hyppelyssä herra aloittaa oikeanpuoleisen daamin kanssa (4 tahtia) ja jatkaa vasemmanpuoleisen daamin kanssa (seuraavat 4 tahtia); daamit tanssivat keskeytyksettä hyppelyn riippumatta herran suunnasta. Herra aloittaa toisen kiertelyn vasemmanpuoleisen daamin kanssa jonka jälkeen hyppely ensin vasemmanpuoleisen, sitten oikeanpuoleisen daamin kanssa. Sama toistetaan reel-sarjan kaikissa rytmeissä.

Enkeliska eli reel neljälle: kaksi paria jonossa siten että herrat ovat keskellä seläkkäin ja daamit jonon päissä, kaikki katsovat pariaan. Kiertely tanssitaan rytmiin sopivalla promenadiaskeleella. Kiertely alkaa ohittamalla oma pari vasemmalta. Kaikki kiertävät kolmisilmukkaisen 8-kuvion kahdeksassa tahdissa kerran läpi. Vasemmalta ohitettaessa tanssijat voivat taputtaa oikeat kädet yhteen olkapäiden yläpuolella ("ylävitonen"); oikealta ohitettaessa ei ojenneta vasenta kättä. Kiertelyn lopuksi daamit palaavat paikoilleen, mutta herrat kääntyvät katsomaan vierasta daamia. Hyppely tanssitaan hyppely- tai setting-askelilla, jotka kukin tanssija improvisoi oman makunsa ja kykyjensä mukaan. Seuraava kiertely lähtee näiltä paikoilta, mutta lopuksi herrat kääntyvät omaan pariin päin. Sama toistetaan reel-sarjan kaikissa rytmeissä.

Promenadiaskel, strathspey: askel eteenpäin oikealla, vasen jalka astuu oikean taakse, oikea astuu uudestaan eteen. Hypähdä oikealla, vasen liukuu ohi aloittaakseen seuraavan askelikon.

Hyppelyaskelia, strathspey: strathspey-rytmisessä hyppelyssä eli settingissä voi käyttää hyvin virtuoosimaisia askelia. Kokeneet reel-tanssijat olisivat käyttäneet vielä laajempaa valikoimaa kuin alla kuvattu.

• promenadiaskel sivuttain.

• balotté (yksi tahti): oikea jalka ojentuu kohotahdin aikana eteen. Hyppy oikelle jalalle, vasen ojentuu taakse. Hyppy vasemmalle jalalle, oikea ojentuu eteen. Hyppy uudelleen oikealle, vasen jää ilmaan oikean nilkan taakse. Hypähdys oikealla jalalla, vasen ojentuu eteen.
• echappé et assemblé (yksi tahti): Hyppy toiseen asentoon, assemblé kolmanteen asentoon päkiöiden varaan, oikea jalka tulee eteen. Hyppy toiseen asentoon, assemblé kolmanteen asentoon päkiöiden varaan, vasen jalka tulee eteen.
• piruetti (yksi tahti): askel oikealle, vasen astuu viereen. Välittömästi plié, jonka aikana oikea jalka pyörähtää taakse, ojenna jalat suoriksi ja käänny koko kierros vasemman päkiän varassa.

Hyppelyaskelia, reel ja jig: hyppely eli setting nopeisiin reel- ja jig-rytmeihin tekee askelvalikoimasta usein suppeamman.

See general information on reels here. First the dancers reel (or hay) and then set. The same figures are repeated in each rhythm of the reel suite: strathspey, reel and jig. Below steps are described starting with right foot, but they can equally start with left.

At Alexander's Ball dancers may choose to dance in either threesomes or foursomes.

Reel of three: gentleman in between two ladies. Reel is danced with promenade step that suits the rhythm. Gentleman initiates the reel with the lady at his right. All reel through in a figure of eight during eight bars of music. Setting is danced with setting steps which each dancer improvises according to their taste and ability. Gentleman initiates setting with lady on his right (four bars of music), then turns to lady on his left and addresses her (next four bars of music). Ladies dance continuously whether the gentleman addresses them or not. Gentleman initiates the second reel with lady on his left, followed by setting with her and then setting with lady on his right. Same figures are repeated to each rhythm of the suit.

Reel of four: two couples in a line so that gentlemen stand in the middle back to back, ladies face their partners at the ends of the line. Reel is danced with promenade step that suits the rhythm. Reel is initiated by passing own partner from left. All reel through in a figure of three-looped eight during eight bars of music. When passing from left dancers may clap right hands at above shoulder level ("high five"); when passing from right left hands are not offered. At the end of the reel ladies return to place but gentlemen turn to face the opposite lady instead of own partner. Setting is danced with setting steps which each dancer improvises according to their taste and ability. Next reel begins from these places and in the end gentlemen turn to face own partner. Same figures are repeated to each rhythm of the suit.

Promenade step, strathspey: step forward right foot, left foot closes behind. Step forward right foot again. Hop on right, left glides past to begin next step.

Promenade step, reel and jig: chassé step. Hop on left, step forward right foot. Left closes behind, hop on left. Step forward right foot again, hop on right, left glides past to begin next step.

Setting steps, strathspey: setting in strathspey rhythm can be a virtuoso display of step combinations. Experienced reel dancers would have used even larger step vocabulary than described below.

• promenade step sideways.
• single footing: hop on left, step right behind left. Leap on left to left, step right behind left. Single footing to one direction takes on bar of music.
• double footing: hop on left, step right behind left. Leap on left to left, step right behind left. Then continue with two combinations of leap left, right behind. Double footing to one direction takes two bars of music.
• sissonne assemblé (one bar): cross springs. Jump on both feet, right lands in front. Hop on left, lift right with relaxed ankle in front. Jump on both feet, right lands behind. Hop on right, lift left with relaxed ankle in front.
• balotté (one bar): chasing steps. Extend right foot in front on upbeat. Leap on right, extend left in air behind. Leap on left, extend right in front. Leap on right again, left stays in air, but this time behind right ankle. Hop on right, left extends in front. 
• echappé et assemblé (one bar): open steps. Jump to second position, assemblé to third postion (right in front), remain at the ball of feet. Jump to second position, assemblé to third position (left in front), remain at the ball of feet.
• pirouet (one bar): step right, close left next to right. Immediately plié, circle right foot behind in air, straighten knees and pivot a full circle on the ball of left foot.

Setting steps, reel and jig: setting in fast reel and jig rhythms is usually done with a less varied step vocabulary.

• promenade step sideways.
• single footing: hop on left, step right behind left. Leap on left to left, step right behind left. Single footing to one direction takes on bar of music.
• double footing: hop on left, step right behind left. Leap on left to left, step right behind left. Then continue with two combinations of leap left, right behind. Double footing to one direction takes two bars of music.
• sissonne assemblé or cross springs as above.
• cabriole (one bar): caper. Jump form both feet, move each leg forward and back as many times as desired or able before landing on both feet.

Somewhat hesitant about the dances and no chance to participate
in rehearsals? Book a visit from the dancing master! He will be
glad to travel in Finland and even internationally - there are still
free weekends in January and shorter trips can be done on weekdays.

You need to find a suitable space and gather a group. We don't
have to dance in a ballroom, any indoor space that is large
enough will do. In an ideal world we always dance on parquet
but as long as there is a smooth floor we will manage. As the
ballroom dances are danced in a group we need several participants.
With eight people we can go through any of the ballroom dances
but minimum is five.

Dancing master will charge travel expenses and 5€/participant/45
minutes. 45 minute workshops can be combined to create longer
units or they can be divided on separate days.

Sola jaetaan A- ja B-pareihin. A-parit ovat tavalliseen tapaan, daami herransa oikealla, mutta B-parit kääntyvät toisin päin, daami herransa vasemmalle.

Longways dance, modified duple minor.

Music: compound duple time. Repeat structure: AABA

The set is divided to couples A and B. A's stand in the usual manner, lady at gentleman's right, but B's turn the other way round, lady on gentleman's left.

A1
1 - 4 Moulinet: couples A and B right hands across
5 - 8 Moulinet: couples A and B left hands across

A2
1 - 3 All sideways to own right.
4      All balotté.
5 - 6 All sideways back left.
7 - 8 All rigaudon.

Moving sideways travels further than moving back left. This takes each dancer one spot (and two people) to right. Next repeat is danced with a new partner. At the ends of the set, when there are no new people on right, one should cross the set to the other side. You can do this either when coming back to left or at the latest immediately after rigaudon.

Every other repeat leaves couples at the ends of the set without contraries. They dance in two, making a right-hand turn and left hand turn together instead of a moulinet, then move sideways and back as per usual.

Tanssiohjelma on jaettu kolmeen osaan jotka vastaavat tanssijoiden taitotasoja. Ensimmäinen sarja sisältää aloittelijoiden, toinen sarja keskitason ja kolmas sarja edistyneiden tanssit. Tällä tavoin kaikki baalivieraat saavat mahdollisuuden tanssia - kaikki vieraat eivät mahdu kartanon tanssisaliin samaan aikaan ja taitotaso pyrkii takaamaan kaikille miellyttävän kokemuksen.

Tanssimestari kertaa sanallisesti kaikki tanssit ja muistuttaa tanssin aikana kuvioista. Tanssiaisissa ei opetella tansseja.

Tanssimestari varaa oikeuden tanssiohjelman muutoksiin, myös tanssiaisten aikana. Tansseja voidaan poistaa tai kerrata riippuen ajasta, tanssijoiden toiveista ja tanssimestarin harkinnasta.

The dance program is divided into three sets that match dancers' skill levels. The first set is for beginners, the second for intermediate and the third for advanced dancers. In this way all ball guests will have an opportunity to dance - all the guests would not fit in the ballroom at the same time - and division based on skill level aims at guaranteeing a pleasant experience for everyone.

The dancing master will talk through and call all dances. There is no practice or rehearsal during the ball.

The dancing master reserves rights to alter the dance program, also during the ball. Dances may be omitted or repeated depending on time, dancers' wishes and the discretion of the dancing master.
